This 31 year old Nigerian mother had no idea what she was about to witness when she went into labor last February. Now, she has no problem telling her twin sons apart.
Brothers Daniel and David were born just minutes apart, yet they look nothing alike except for big brown eyes. Their parents Stacy and Babajide, who live in Lagos, are bothe black, but one of the babies was born a.lbino. As a result, the adorable twins make heads turn whenever they are in public – Daniel has dark and black curly hair, just like his 5 year old big sister Demilade, and David has ʜᴏᴄᴋing white pale skin and golden locks.
Satcy decided to share the adventures of the unusual duo on Instagram and just over a year old, the twins have almost 18k followers. The twins were born on the 26th of february last year and it was a huge surprise to everyone. “We did not know about their differences while I was pregnant, the scan did not show such so it was a huge surprise and the most amazing moment was when the first twin (Daniel) came out with black hair and the second twin (David) came out with gold hair. I had the, through CS, so the doctors were like: “It seems you are having totally identical twins.” Before I knew it, nurses started coming out to look at them,” mum of there, Stacy, told Bored Panda. Stacy told us how her husband reacted to this unexpected situation and it’s heartwarming.
“Their dad was really overwhelmed and immediately named My Twin 2 (David) ‘Golden’ so he fondly calls him Mr.Golden. He was all overjoyed seeing his boys. He stood for more than 10 minutes staring at them and said he was just looking at God’s wonderful work and that they are his best gift ever.” David has a.lbinism, which makes him 1 in 20000 people worldwide born with this genetic condition. A.lbinism is an inherited genetic condition caused by the lack of melanin, the pigment formed in the skin, hair, and eyes. It occurs in all ethnic and racial groups and the levels of pigmentation can vary depending on its type. The chance of being born with a.lbinism typically ranges from 1 in 3000 to 1 in 20000. It can include various skin and vision complications, so a.lbinos have to be extremely cautious.
David has oculocutaneous albinism, which results in his light skin and gorgeous golden curls. Stacy said that luckily, David does not have any health issues. The rate of people living with a.lbinism in Nigeria is among the highest in the world with an estimated number of over 2 million a.lbinos living in the country. Yet despite the statistics, this group faces serious discrimination due to a different skin color. According to statistics, over 600000 a.lbino Nigerians suffer from discrimination and ʙᴜʟʟʏing from their families, schoolmates, and peers, which often results in their poverty and lack of education. However, Stacy admitted that she’d never received any negative comments and both boys are loved equally and unconditionally.
“There’re always side talks whenever we go out, people often wanna know how and what’s happening and maybe due to their cute and adorable nature, you just wanna come close to say hello.” Due to the twin’s unique appearance, the family has been receiving attention from kids’ clothing brands, as well as modeling offers from the UK. The family is open to opportunities and have created an Instagram account to spread their joy and raise awareness. “ We opened an account for them because we believe they have a story to tell to the world and also as a way of creating awareness,” said Stacy.
“They have two different amazing personalities, they are a year old now, walking and very playful,” said Stacy. “Daniel is more expressive while David is an observer. Both of them are highly inquisitive. Daniel is a foodiee while David is quite picky, Daniel is extremely playful while David chooses moments, Daniel always likes to play the bigger brother role; they are both energetic.”
